MainTrail Heading North From Us

Take the dirt trail leading from the Jamaca Inn cabin (for rentals click here) to the northwest towards Okaso. Please stay off the highway, as traffic there goes faster than the speed limit. It takes a little less than a half hour to trek to the cemetery. In the spring you'll be able to spot a large family of Grackles feeding. Later in the year there are plenty of other song birds to enjoy in the open areas.

Rhubarb Cemetary

"Rhubarb Cemetary" is a small graveyard serving a select few families from Okaso and Herrington. The majority of grave sites date from the 1870s to 1930. After that, both towns began and maintained their own cemeteries. This site is nearly forgotten.

The knickname came around that time, when numerous rhubarb plants sprung up. To keep them from taking over the area, local residents pick them over for baking. These treats will appear at various events or purchased at Kathy's Wine Shoppe.

Echo Point is a spot alongside the cemetery. From this location, face east across from Shoreline 105. On either a very windy day or especially during a lightning storm, the storms will echo off the far coast.

For everyone's safety, we can't recommend being outside either near the water or by trees during a storm. Take these risks on your own. Do not use binoculars when viewing electrical storms. That said, the secondary BOOM! from thunder is an experience.

The easiest way to find the best spot is to locate the bust for Doctor Andrew J. Sheridan, the original benefactor of the local instititute named after him. It's very prominent off the main trail.  There is a stone bench to picnic on. Even on normal days, enjoying the sunrise from here can be a great way to start the day. You should be able to see the Shoreline 105 and Shoreline 106 lighthouses in the distance.

Again, the view during a storm is fantastic!
