June - August

Olgefield Beach

The Olgeby Beach is open during the summer 9am to 10pm. By tradition, high school pranksters swim out and tie old tires to the first buoy. Locally known as the "Loch Ness Buoy."

Clown Art

Some consider it the best part of summer when Basil Street is blocked off for a weekend of Clown Art. Local artists will display (and sell) their work. Occurs in July opposite the town square from the farmer's market. Face painting for the young at heart.

Annual Hearse Show

It may seem a tad morbid, but many people flock to town in August for the annual hearse convention. Older models, antiques of the business, are displayed as well as the newest models. See official site for details.

September - January

City Central Festival

The local festival and pie contest is the third weekend of every September. Carnival rides for the kids and a hotly contested apple-rhubarb pie contest Saturday afternoon. Will the head librarian win again? Come to help judge.

Ghosts Parties

It almost goes without saying, the main occupation during December is hosting Ghost of Lighthouse Past parties. A family-friendly public event (including a visit from Santa!) happens the first weekend in downtown Okaso.

Poe Toasting

Edgar Allen Poe was born January  19, 1809. (In)famously, there was a mysterious person who toasted his life at his grave every year. Baltimore is many miles away but the tradition lives on here. A candlelight walk in the woods is followed by the offical toast by the town president.

February - May

History Discussion

History Professor Gary Randisi  gives a yearly PowerPoint talk on the 6 volumes of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Each year he focuses on one volume. See Extension for schedule.

Messier Party

April 15th (16th if weather is bad) amateur astronomers will gather for an all night session to spot as many Messier objects as possible. Followed by breakfast at Kathy's Wine Shoppe.

Return of Bobolinks

The second weekend of May is special. A large number of Dolichonyx oryzivorus, Bobolinks, return to the cliffs to feed and nest. Bring a picnic and binculars to enjoy the yearly return.
